Why Africa Doesn't Need Silicon Valley's Playbook
Silicon Valley's management playbook assumes: formal employment, banked workers, legal infrastructure, venture capital, and smartphone penetration. In Mozambique, none of these exist at scale. Importing Silicon Valley management to Mozambique is like bringing a snowplow to the Sahara.
The Mismatch
| Silicon Valley Assumption | Mozambique Reality | |--------------------------|-------------------| | Formal employment | 80% informal | | Banked population | 66% unbanked | | Smartphone penetration | 38% | | Venture capital | Virtually none | | Legal infrastructure | Evolving (VASP 2023) | | Performance reviews | Never existed for informal workers |
What Africa Needs Instead
Africa needs management infrastructure designed for its reality: USSD instead of apps, M-Pesa instead of banks, escrow instead of salaries, NFT credentials instead of diplomas, reputation instead of credit scores, DAOs instead of corporate boards.
The Innovation
The most innovative management insight of the 21st century may come from Africa, not Silicon Valley. Because Africa is where the constraints are hardest, the solutions must be most creative. And when you solve for the hardest constraints, you create solutions that work everywhere.
Empreenda isn't adapting Silicon Valley for Africa. It's building something Silicon Valley can't.
