Informal Referral vs Structured Apprenticeship: Which Actually Builds a Career?
Many services in Mozambique help entry-level workers find a nearby experienced worker to shadow informally. That's a good starting point — but there's a significant difference between an informal referral and a structured, paid, credentialed apprenticeship.
The Comparison
| Feature | Informal Referral | Structured Apprenticeship | |---------|----------------------|-------------------------------| | Finding a mentor | Call a nearby experienced worker | Matched by trade and location | | Curriculum | None — depends entirely on mentor | Defined modules, 30% theory/70% practice | | Payment during learning | Negotiated informally, often unpaid | Structured stipend, earning from week 4 | | Proof of completion | None | Verifiable digital credential | | Consistency | Highly variable by mentor | Standardized assessment criteria |
Why "Find a Master and Ask" Isn't Enough
An informal referral depends entirely on which experienced worker happens to be available and willing — there's no guarantee of teaching quality, no structured curriculum, and often no pay during the learning period, which excludes anyone who can't afford months without income.
What Structure Actually Adds
A structured apprenticeship defines exactly what will be taught, in what order, assessed against what standard — and pays the apprentice from early on so financial need doesn't force them to drop out before completing training.
The Credential Gap
Even a great informal mentorship leaves a graduate with nothing to show for it beyond word-of-mouth. A structured program issues a verifiable credential — proof of competency that works even when the mentor who trained you isn't there to vouch for you personally.
Both Have a Place
Informal referrals work well for quick, low-stakes skill transfer. For building an actual career — with income during training and proof of competency afterward — structured, paid apprenticeship is a fundamentally different and stronger model.
