Beyond the Directory: Creating a New Market Category in Mozambique
Most informal-work platforms compete for the same thing — connecting a nearby worker to a client, as fast and cheaply as possible. That's a crowded, low-margin race. There's a different, uncontested space: guaranteeing the transaction itself, not just the introduction.
The Old Category vs the New One
| Old Category: Worker Directory | New Category: Verified Livelihood Infrastructure | |-------------------------------------|-------------------------------------------------------| | Solves: finding someone nearby | Solves: transacting safely with anyone | | Value: speed of connection | Value: certainty of outcome | | Competes on: being free | Competes on: being trustworthy | | Data asset: none | Data asset: verified transaction and credential history |
What Gets Eliminated in This New Category
Word-of-mouth vetting, informal moneylenders charging 50-100% interest, and unpaid apprenticeships with no proof of completion all become unnecessary once payment guarantees, reputation-based credit, and verified credentials exist natively in the platform.
What Gets Created That Didn't Exist Before
A market for reputation-backed microcredit for the previously unbanked. A market for verifiable impact data that funders can actually audit. A way for diaspora members to sponsor and track a specific person's progress, not just send money into the void.
Why This Matters More Than Feature Comparisons
Competing feature-by-feature against an established free directory is a losing game — there's always a way to add one more feature. Creating a category that doesn't ask "which app is better at connecting people" but instead "which platform actually guarantees my money and my time" sidesteps the comparison entirely.
The Real Opportunity
Mozambique's informal economy doesn't need another way to find a worker faster. It needs the connective tissue that turns informal work into a verifiable, bankable, insurable livelihood — a category that barely exists yet.
