Directory Apps vs Escrow-Protected Platforms: What's the Real Difference?
Mozambique has several apps that connect clients to informal workers by phone. But connecting two people is not the same as protecting the transaction between them — and that difference determines whether you actually get paid, or paid for, safely.
The Two Categories
| Feature | Directory/Matching App | Escrow-Protected Platform | |---------|----------------------------|-------------------------------| | Finding a worker | ✅ Phone-based search and call | ✅ Phone-based search and match | | Payment method | Cash or mobile money, hand-to-hand | Payment locked until job confirmed | | Payment guarantee | ❌ None — trust the person directly | ✅ Funds held until both sides agree | | Skill verification | Post-job ratings only | Verifiable, stackable credentials | | Dispute recourse | ❌ None — informal negotiation only | Structured tribunal review | | Credit access | ❌ Not connected to financial services | Reputation-based microcredit |
Why "Just Connecting People" Isn't Enough
A directory solves discovery — finding someone nearby who does the work you need. It does not solve the two oldest problems in informal work: will I actually get paid and will the work actually get done right. Those require payment protection and verified skill history, not just a phone number.
What Escrow Actually Changes
When payment is locked in escrow until a job is verifiably complete, neither the client nor the worker is exposed to the other simply disappearing after the deal is struck. This isn't a minor feature — it's the single biggest source of trust failure in phone-based hiring today.
What Verified Credentials Change
A rating left after a job tells you what one client thought. A verified credential tells you the worker demonstrated a specific skill to a specific standard, checked instantly by anyone — before they ever hire.
The Bigger Picture
Directory apps were the right first step for connecting Mozambique's informal workforce digitally. The next step is making those connections safe to transact on — which is a different problem, solved by different infrastructure.
